Electrolysis
Q How does electrolysis work?

A A small metal probe is inserted into the hair follicle alongside the hair in order to deliver a small amount of electrical current. Depending on the technique used, the electric current destroys the hair root either by heat or chemical action and in some methods by both at the same time.

The three recognized methods of electrolysis are:

GALVANIC (direct current) electrolysis - the hair is destroyed by chemical action.

THERMOLYSIS (high frequency) electrolysis - the hair root is destroyed by heat production.

BLEND electrolysis - a combination of the above two modalities where the hair root is destroyed by both heat and chemical action at the same time.

All three methods are safe and effective and delivered to the hair follicle. Your electrologist will choose the method which is best for you.

Q Is electrolysis permanent?

A Electrolysis has been shown to be permanent in over a century of use. Its permanency has been recognized by knowledgeable physicians and is also testified to by hundreds of scientific articles published in the medical literature. In addition to scientific recognition, there are over one million happy and satisfied persons who have solved a very personal and embarrassing problem with the help of electrolysis.

Q Is electrolysis painful?

A Whether there is any discomfort during electrolysis is quite variable depending on the patient's tolerance, machine settings, modality used, as well as other factors. During most treatments a definite sensation should be noticed. It has been variously described as a "slight heat", "tingling" or "stinging" sensation. Your electrologist is trained to work within the comfort tolerance of his/her patients. For those individuals who are more sensitive, a topical anesthetic can be applied. Don't hesitate to let her know what you are feeling.

Q Are there any side effects to electrolysis?

A Electrolysis, like many minor procedures in medicine, does have a short healing phase. During this time, there may be some transient redness or swelling and occasionally some pinpoint scabbing. Your electrologist will advise you regarding what can be expected during the healing phase.

Q Do home methods of electrolysis work?

A Not very well. If the home method is one where the probe is inserted into the hair follicle, it has the potential for working. The problem with home methods is treating yourself which often requires mirrors or having an untrained friend help you. The technique of electrolysis requires significant training for proper hand-eye coordination and is usually performed using a special light and magnification. Without proper training, adequate lighting and magnification, the home methods in most cases, will not be worth the effort and expense.

Q Is electrolysis safe?

A Electrolysis has a 120 year history of safety and effectiveness. "I am not aware of one case of significant disease being caused or transmitted because of electrolysis." - Dr. James E. Schuster, M.D. Modern well-trained electrologists utilize the most up-to-date, effective methods of sterilization, disinfection and antisepsis, and follow guidelines set up by a major electrolysis organization in conjunction with the CDC (Center of Disease Control). Don't hesitate to ask you electrologist about the sanitation methods he/she uses to guarantee your safety.

Q What areas of the body can be treated?

A Hair can be removed from almost any part of the body. Some common areas for women include the hairline, eyebrow, top of the nose, cheeks, side burn area, upper and lower lip, chin, throat, neck, shoulders, back, chest, breasts, abdomen, arms, legs, bikini line, hands, feet, toes and fingers. Hair on the eyelashes, inside the nose and inside the ear canal are only treated under the supervision of a physician. Hairy moles may be treated with written permission from a physician.

Q Is electrolysis limited to female clientele?

A Absolutely not. Men often have hair removed from the hairline, beard line, shoulders, back, neck, chest, ears and nose. Electrolysis is very helpful for treating ingrown hairs which frequently cause irritation in the beard area.

Q Can I receive electrolysis during pregnancy?

A It is perfectly safe to treat pregnant women, but the breasts and abdomen are avoided after the sixth month of pregnancy.

Q How long does electrolysis take to acheive permanency?

A Electrolysis requires a series of treatments given over a period of time. The length of time varies from person to person and is dependent on many factors. The density and coarseness of the hair, as well as the total area to be treated, are very important. How well you tolerate treatments and the consistency of the treatments affect the overall success. The cause of the unwanted hair and the temporary methods of dealing with the hair in the past area also involved in the treatment time. Many hairs will be permanently removed after the first treatment while some will require additional treatments to achieve permanency. Treatments will be more frequent in the beginning and less frequent later on. The overall results, permanent, hair-free skin, are usually well worth the time spent.

Q Why should I choose electrolysis to solve my unwanted hair problems?

A Time is one factor for choosing electrolysis in today's fast-paced world. Dealing with unwanted hair in a temporary way is tedious, costly and never-ending. Permanent hair removal frees you from this daily routine.

Electrolysis also improves your physical appearance and self-image, lessens anxiety caused by the unwanted hair and helps you feel more attractive and socially acceptable. It is a choice that will enhance your own natural beauty and self-confidence.

Lastly, electrolysis has been proven safe and effective over many years of use and is recognized by physicians and the American Medical Association. You can be confident that permanent hair removal will change your life in a positive and lasting way.

Q Are there other methods of hair removal as effective as electrolysis?

A No. There is absolutely no reputable scientific evidence that shows any other method of hair removal being as safe, effective and permanent as electrolysis. However, laser hair removal on the right skin and hair type does remove a large percent of the hair.

Laser Hair Removal
Q What is the Candela GentleLASE laser and why is it a safe treatment?

A The GentleLASE System, a revolutionary long-pulse high energy alexandrite laser emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed. The laser energy is transformed into heat, which destroys the hair follicle leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. The skin is further protected during treatment by a Dynamic Cooling Device where cryogen is sprayed onto the skin cooling the upper layers and providing patients with increased comfort. The GentleLASE selectivity helps to protect the skin, while effectively treating the unwanted hair.

Q What conditions are treated with the laser?

A Traditional hair removal techniques, such as shaving, plucking, waxing and depilatory creams provide only temporary relief. Until now, the only recognized way to remove hair permanently has been by electrolysis - which can be tedious, time-consuming and uncomfortable. The GentleLASE System safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin.

Q What safety procedures are followed during the laser procedure?

A During the procedure, both the patient and the practitioner wear safety eye wear to protect their eyes from the laser light. A test area will be done prior to the entire treatment. Your full treatment may be done on the same day or up to two weeks later, depending on the skin reaction. All instruments used during the process are sanitized according to state guidelines.

Q Will I experience discomfort or side effects from the laser treatment?

A The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold. Topical anesthesia may also be requested based on individual preferences or tolerances. Be sure to discuss this with your practitioner in advance of the laser treatment.

The treated area may become pink or red within 30 minutes of treatment; this may last from a few hours to several days and is relieved with the application of ice or cooling gels.

Q What precautions should be taken before and after the treatment?

A The following precautions should be taken:
Bullet 1 Avoid the sun 4-6 weeks before and after treatment or until your practitioner allows it.
Bullet 2 You must avoid electrolysis, plucking or waxing hair for 6 weeks prior to treatment.
Bullet 3 If you have had a history of perioral herpes, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be requested.
Bullet 4 If you have a dark skin type, a bleaching cream may be started 4-6 weeks before treatment to optimize results.
You should discuss your desired results and the improvements you expect to achieve with your practitioner. Together you can decide if your expectations will be met and if this laser treatment is the best option.

Q How long is each treatment and how many will I need?

A The procedure can take as little as 10 minutes or up to an hour, depending on the area treated. Facial and bikini area are usually completed in under ten minutes; legs, backs and larger areas can take longer.

Hair grows in cycles. The number of treatments required depends up on your skin color, hair color and coarseness of the hair. Everyone will require at least 4-6 treatments as the process is only effective on hair during the early growing cycle. Repeat sessions will be necessary to treat these follicles when the re-enter the early growth phase.

Q Is this procedure covered by insurance?

A Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures. However, consult with your insurance carrier for more information.

Waxing
Q What does waxing feel like?

A Waxing feels a lot like pulling off a band-aid. The muslin strip is removed in a quick movement. You may experience a tingling feeling for a few minutes afterward. Keep in mind some areas are more sensitive than others.

Q How long does my hair need to be for waxing?

A The hair on your body needs to be 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length for waxing. If the hair is coarser, for example on the legs or underarms, it should be closer to 1/2 inch to obtain the best possible results.

Micro-dermabrasion
Q How does micro-dermabasion work?

A SmartPeel technology combines two important elements; a stream of pure crystals delivered to the outer layers of the skin and a vacuum to increase circulation. As damaged cells are lifted away from the skins surface, new cell production is stimulated at the base layers of the skin. The skin will gradually appear smoother, firmer, younger and more radiant.

Q How long do treatments take and how many will I need?

AMost facial visits take up to 30 minutes. Treatments that include the neck and decollete can take up to an hour. Time will vary for body exfoliation such as hands, arms or back treatments.

For maximum results a routine of 6 to 10 treatments are recommended at 1 to 2 week intervals. Maintenance visits for age management are recommended quarterly, and more often for the treatment of skin dysfunction.

Ask your skincare specialist for a complete skin health analysis to determine if micro-dermabrasion is right for you.

Q Why micro-dermabrasion over other exfoliating treatments?

A Micro-dermabrasion offers quick results with minimal healing time and is a cost effective alternative to more invasive procedures.

Q Will I experience discomfort during this procedure?

ASmartPeel Micro-dermabrasion was designed with the safety and comfort of the client in mind. The unique anti-viral air filtration system, comfort hand piece and reproducible controls allow your Skincare Specialist to customize the treatment to your specific skin type. With any type of exfoliation some redness may occur and sensitivity to active products or topical prescriptions may be enhanced. Most side effects are minimal and generally fade within 24 hours. The majority of people receiving a SmartPeel treatment return to normal activity immediately.

Q Who can benefit from micro-dermabrasion?

A Micro-dermabrasion skin exfoliaton is the smart choice for individuals who wish to:
Bullet 1 Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
Bullet 2 Control blackheads and whiteheads
Bullet 3 Lighten discolorations from sun damage and hormones
Bullet 4 Smooth the appearance of scars from acne or chicken pox

Nail Care
Q My nails are splitting and peeling. Is there anything I can do to make them stronger?

A Regular manicures will help keep your nails and cuticles in a healthier state. Wearing polish also helps protect your nails from outside elements that adversely effect the nail. We also recommend NailTek products for the nail. NailTek has an excellent system that you can use at home between salon visits.

Q I recently removed my artificial nails and my natural nails are damaged. What can I do to help them grow out?

A The amount of damage to the nail bed varies from person to person depending on the type of artificial nail products used and the instruments used in nail maintenance. The best option is to come in and have a nail technician assess the situation. Nails grow approximately 1/8 inch a month, so it will take 6-7 months to completely grow out the nail. During this time, regular manicures are recommended to keep the nail and cuticles in optimum condition. Also, using the NailTek system at home between salon visits will help add strength to the nails.

Q How regularly should I get a pedicure?

A There are several things to take into consideration when answering this question. First, what is your occupation? If it is one where you stand on your feet most of the time, you might consider a pedicure every three weeks. This will help keep callouses reduced and stimulate circulation in your feet.

Secondly, do you exercise on a regular basis? This can cause callouses to form on various parts of your feet. A pedicure every four to six weeks will help to minimize callouses and invigorate your feet.

Finally, what is your footwear preference? Different shoe types can determine how much your feet are exposed to the elements. If you prefer sandals or no shoes, your feet will need pedicures more frequently to exfoliate the skin and reduce callouses.

Q What can I do to relieve chapped skin and dry cuticles?

A We recommend a spa manicure every two to three weeks. This will depend on the amount of discomfort you are experiencing. The spa manicure incorporates exfoliation, lotions and a paraffin treatment to sooth chapped skin and replenish moisture in your skin.

Q I want to stop biting my nails & cuticles. Will regular manicures help?

A Yes, regular manicure will help tremendously in your quest to stop biting your nails and cuticles. Regular manicures will soften your cuticles and reduce the amount of skin you might pick at. Also, it will keep the free edge of your nail shaped during the growing process. Keeping your nails polished can also give you incentive to not bite your nails. *Spa manicures will add extra moisture to the skin enhancing the process.
